Both segments of the Indigo subsea cable network were completed in late 2018 and are expected to go into operation later this year. Brazil, Monet went into operation in 2017 with three landing points: Boca Raton, Florida and Fortaleza and Santos in Brazil. Running 390km from Rio de Janeiro to Santos, Junior was technically Google’s first fully owned subsea cable, but given that it runs to and from Brazil, it’s not "international" - which gives Curie’s completion this week a unique distinction. In addition to its subsea investments with Google, Facebook has also partnered with Microsoft for a 4,000-mile transatlantic internet cable, with Amazon and SoftBank for a 14,000 km transpacific cable connecting Asia with North America, and on myriad other cable investments around the world. In North America, this reverse signal is a modulated RF ranging from 5-42 MHz while in other parts of the world, the range is 5-65 MHz. While motor cables are typically offered with four cores (L1, L2, L3, PE) or as single core, a control cable often consists of many more cores. All wiring in a circuit except for the leads that are part of a device or fixture must be of the required gauge or larger.

For copper wiring the following wire sizes and ampacity ratings or fuse/circuit breaker sizes are common on 120V residential electrical circuits. There are a lot of issues with the set top box proposal but I’ll highlight a few. The FCC’s recent proposal to "open up" TV set top boxes is consistent with the FCC’s reinvention as the US Internet regulator, and now the White House has supported that push. I really don’t even like referring to it as "the set top box proposal" because the proposal is really aimed at the future of TV-video viewing via apps and connected devices. This latest plan has an even smaller chance of success because the FCC is not simply regulating cable boxes, but also boxes from satellite TV and IPTV distributors and their apps. And, despite what is control cable activists say, this isn’t about "cable" either but all TV distributors ("MVPDs") like satellite and telephone companies and Google Fiber, most of whom are small TV players.

The current FCC, exhibiting alarming mission creep, has started importing its legacy regulations to the online world, like Title II common carrier regulations for Internet providers. There are currently more than 400 undersea cables in service around the world, constituting 1.1 million kilometers (700,000 miles). Google is now directly invested in around 100,000 kilometers of these cables (62,000 miles), which equates to nearly 10% of all subsea cables globally. Google announced its second self-owned international subsea cable last year. Wireless telegraphy developed in the early 20th century became important for maritime use, and was a competitor to electrical telegraphy using submarine telegraph cables in international communications. Google’s increasing investment in submarine cables fits into a broader trend of major technology companies investing in the infrastructure their services rely on. The social network behemoth is also investing in numerous satellite internet projects and had worked on an autonomous solar-powered drone project that was later canned.

The Havfrue/AEC-2 cable is the second subsea project Google has partnered with Facebook on, and investors include Aqua Comms and Bulk Infrastructure. At 12,971km, the PLCN cable is the longest single cable infrastructure project Google has invested in to date. Optical filters are used to combine and split optical wavelengths onto the single fiber. First, the entire push for the proposal is based on the baseless notion that "charging monthly STB fees reveals that cable companies are abusing their market power." I say baseless because cable companies have lost 14 million TV subscribers since 2002 to phone and satellite companies’ TV offerings (Verizon FiOS TV, Dish, Google Fiber, etc.), which suggests cable doesn’t have market power to charge anticompetitive prices. When programming can be easily repurposed, as the FCC would like, what is control cable that upends entire business models of hundreds of media companies and distributors. This poses a significant threat to the FCC’s jurisdiction because it is the primary regulator of communications and media. For decades Congress has gradually deregulated communications and media. Even that "hook" is dubious-the FCC arbitrarily classifies apps and software as "navigation devices" but concludes that actual TV devices like Chromecast, Roku, smartphones, and tablets aren’t navigation devices.
