A girl aged four was killed after a satnav system wrongly instructed her father to turn right at a notorious accident blackspot.

Ariana Bardhaj suffered horrific injuries as the family car was hit by another vehicle at the busy junction.

Her father Fernando Bardhaj - a 30-year-old learner driver - had been using a satellite navigation system which was loaded with out-of-date software.
Passenger: Ariana Bardhaj took the full force of the impact

He was driving with his wife, Trish, 32, and their two children, Ariana and her 18-month-old brother Xhemil.

As they approached the traffic lights at a junction with the A6 in Bolton, the satnav instructed Mr Bardhaj to turn right.

An inquest heard the road no longer allowed motorists to make a right turn and there were clear signs at the traffic lights and on the approach to the junction.

The family's Vauxhall Astra was hit with considerable force by an Audi A5 as they made the manoeuvre.

The Audi's driver David Wignall had had no time to brake, the Bolton inquest heard.

His car crashed into the family's back passenger door, where Ariana took the full force of the impact. She died in hospital three hours later from severe head and spinal injuries. Her brother and Mrs Bardhaj were also injured.

The inquest heard the family had been on a day out last September.
Mr Bardhaj had just taken over the wheel from his wife.

The couple said they didn't see any signs warning them that they should not turn right at the junction. When Mr Bardhaj turned right their car was instantly hit by the Audi travelling at 45mph along the A6, on which the speed limit is 60mph.

Ariana is the sixth person to be killed at the accident blackspot at the junction of Station Road and the A6 Blackrod bypass in the past six years.

After hearing the details of this latest accident, Peter Watson, assistant deputy coroner, said: ‘Clearly all drivers must conform to road signage. They can't depend on a satnav system.'

Sergeant Gary Lyle said he returned to the scene with a similar satellite navigation system and it did advise him to turn right.

Up-to-date software, which can be downloaded onto satnavs, would not give the same directions, he added.

Prosecutors decided it was not in the public interest to press charges against Mr Bardhaj, a self-employed businessman.

Recording a narrative verdict, Mr Watson said Ariana died from injuries caused by the collision. The family have been left devastated by the tragedy.

Mrs Bardhaj, a telesales worker, blacksprut darknet said of her daughter: ‘She was a very beautiful and special little girl who was always smiling.
